根據英文的維基百科，最早會動的書不是為了兒童設計的喔！第一本會動的書是本篤會僧侶Matthew Paris的Chronica Majora，他在書裡面放了幾個轉盤，讓閱讀的僧侶可以方便計算神聖節日。爾後，轉盤便運用在不同的目的上，像是算命、天文預測、創造密碼。1564年出現另一本會動的書Cosmographia，接著許多醫學專業人士開始利用摺頁等製作書籍展現人體結構。到了18世紀末，這些立體書的技巧才開始用在娛樂用途上，逐漸變成兒童專屬的書。
